That’s Amore

It has been described too often by too many.
It enchants; it is expensive
and could even drown you
if you do not watch your step.
It is tawdry, often, visited by those
for whom it is a theme park.
It is easy to get lost in it.
But that’s the chance you have to take:
to take the twisting side streets
leading from San Marco
till you can hear the water
lapping in the stillness;
then watch the phosphorescent little splash
your guidebook makes
as you toss it from the Bridge of Sighs.
