This poem was inspired by a visit to the ancient cliff tombs of Lycia, now a part of modern Turkey on the Mediterranean coast.
Lycia
I rested till grave robbers stole into the tomb,
smashed the marble box and snatched the things
I thought would stay with me forever.
My family went to great expense
to build this cliffside aerie for me when I died,
a hundred feet above the river.
For centuries I watched the seabirds wheel and dive,
saw the same old men pull flailing crabs from mud,
saw great ships set sail together out of Caunos.
And now my afterlife is this: to take my place, invisible,
among the rock doves. Stripped of all my gold,
my funeral vessel shattered, I’m untethered.
I miss my wife. I even miss my grave. I miss the schools
of fish that thronged this estuary, miss the sting of bees,
miss the misery of being a father
whose daughter loves a foreign sailor. I wish –
you cannot imagine how I wish — I had a body,
though I am free to fly above these cliffs.
